Scholl Flight Socks - Ladies' are a semi-sheer 30 Denier knee-high and are available in a natural skin tone so they look just like normal ladies' hosiery. Previously, Flight Socks have only been available as black socks, which limited their appeal to a lot of women.

Passengers on long-haul flights can be subjected to long periods of inactivity, a cramped seated position and a tendency to become dehydrated. These conditions can cause a number of circulatory problems, ranging from swollen ankles and tired aching legs, to more serious medical conditions such as Deep Vein Thrombosis - DVT (blood clots).

Latest medical evidence suggests one in thirty long-haul passengers risk developing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). It's a severe medical condition that has taken lives all over the world. The fact is, if you fly on a long haul flight, you could be at risk. However, a clinically proven way to reduce the risk of developing DVT is by wearing Scholl Flight Socks. They look like ordinary socks but use a Graduated Compression System to improve blood circulation and help prevent the build up of excess fluid in the legs. So before you fly, reduce the risk of becoming another statistic and buy a pair of Scholl Flight Socks.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

A Deep Vein Thrombosis is a clot of blood that forms in the leg veins. A DVT is not dangerous in itself, but complications arising from it may occasionally be life threatening. If the clots start to break free from the veins and pass through the blood stream into the lungs (a condition called "pulmonary emblous") a person could suffer from pain in the chest, worsened by breathing. Pulmonary embolus can also cause shortness of breath and the coughing up of small amounts of blood.

Most importantly of all, but fortunately rarely, if the blood clot is large enough, it can cause sudden death by travelling to the heart and lungs and interrupting the blood flow.

Prevention

It must be stressed that the risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis of pulmonary embolus during flight is low, but it can occur. The consequences can be extremely serious and therefore prevention is important.

Excersising the legs while seated, getting up and walking around the cabin, drinking water or soft drinks and avoiding excessive tea, coffee or alcohol, are all simple but vital elements in preventing DVT.

Another recommended precaution is the wearing of Scholl Flight Socks. Legs tend to swell during flight due to the low cabin pressure and remaining in one position for a long period of time. Scholl Flight Socks can aid the movement of blood in the veins because they are designed to provide extra support that leg veins may need to ensure correct circulation.

Scholl Flight Socks use a clinically proven graduated compression system to improve blood flow and help relieve leg discomfort.

Scholl Flight Socks help prevent:

  • risk of circulatory problems such as Deep Vein Thrombosis - DVT (blood clots)
  • swollen ankles
  • tired aching legs

Scholl Flight Socks contain a compression level of 10mmHg at the ankle

Proven Results

The LONFLIT 4 study, published in 2002, shows that compression socks, like Scholl Flight Socks (compression level 14-17mmHg), can effectively reduce the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) on long haul flights. The study tested more than 600 passengers on long haul flights from London to New York (7-8 hours) and London to Phoenix, Arizona (11-12 hours).

Half of the passengers took no preventative measures against DVT and the other half wore Scholl Flight Socks. The study focused only on people classed as low-to-medium risk of DVT and found that:

  • more than 4% of those not wearing Flight Socks suffered from some form of thrombosis during the flight to Phoenix.
  • more than 3% of those not wearing Flight Socks suffered from some form of thrombosis during the flight to New York.
  • the incidence of thrombosis among those wearing Scholl Flight Socks was zero.

The study also found clear evidence that wearing Scholl Flight Socks prevented oedema, which is believed to be a cause of DVT through veins being compressed. The research found that the level of oedema (swelling) in passengers' legs wearing Scholl Flight Socks was approximately three times lower than in those passengers who did not take any preventative measures.
