Laptop Sleeve

A laptop sleeve protects your device from scratches, bumps, and compression in a bag without adding the bulk of a full laptop bag. For travellers who carry a laptop in a backpack or carry-on, a sleeve is the most practical protection option — it keeps the laptop safe, makes security screening faster, and adds almost no weight.

Travel Gear stocks padded laptop sleeves for 13 to 17 inch laptops, shipping from our Charlestown NSW warehouse with fast delivery across Australia.

Types of Laptop Sleeves

Neoprene Sleeves

Soft, flexible neoprene provides good scratch and bump protection and a snug fit. The most common laptop sleeve material — lightweight, water-resistant, and available in a wide range of sizes. Best for laptops carried in a padded backpack where the sleeve provides scratch protection rather than impact protection.

Padded Nylon Sleeves

Structured padding provides better impact protection than neoprene. Typically heavier but more protective for laptops carried in bags without a dedicated laptop compartment. Look for at least 10mm of foam padding on all sides.

Sleeves with Accessory Pockets

A front zip pocket for a charger, cables, and a mouse adds useful organisation without significantly increasing the sleeve's size. Useful for travellers who want to keep their laptop and accessories together in one slim package.

What to Look for in a Laptop Sleeve

  • Size: Measure your laptop's dimensions and choose a sleeve that fits snugly — too loose and the laptop moves around; too tight and it's hard to insert and remove
  • Padding: At least 8–10mm of foam padding for meaningful impact protection
  • Water resistance: A water-resistant exterior protects against spills and light rain
  • Security screening: Some sleeves open flat for security screening without removing the laptop from the sleeve
  • Weight: A good laptop sleeve weighs 200–400g — light enough to not significantly affect your carry-on weight

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a laptop sleeve if my backpack has a laptop compartment?

A padded laptop compartment in a backpack provides good protection on its own. A sleeve adds an extra layer of scratch protection and makes it easier to move the laptop between bags. If you regularly switch between bags, a sleeve is worth having. If your laptop stays in one bag, the compartment alone is usually sufficient.

What size laptop sleeve do I need?

Measure your laptop's width and depth (not the screen size). A 15-inch MacBook Pro measures approximately 34cm x 24cm — a 15-inch sleeve fits it correctly. A 13-inch MacBook Air measures approximately 30cm x 21cm. Always check the sleeve's internal dimensions against your laptop's actual measurements rather than relying on the screen size label.

Are laptop sleeves carry-on safe?

Yes — laptop sleeves are carry-on safe with no restrictions. At security, you'll need to remove the laptop from the sleeve and place it in a tray separately unless your sleeve is specifically designed for security screening without removal.
