About Kirghiz (Kyrgyz)

Kirghiz (Kyrgyz) belongs to the Turkic group of languages, which form a branch of the Atlaic family. Other members of this language family are Turkmen, Uzbek, and Kazakh. Kirghiz first used an Arabic script, which in 1928 was replaced by a Latin script until this was changed to a Cyrillic one in the 1940s. A transition to the Roman alphabet is envisaged for the future.

There are about 3 million Kirghiz speakers in the world.
