Water Purification – Portable Filters & Purifiers for Travel

In Australian bush camping and international travel, water sources can't always be trusted. Tap water in many countries carries bacteria, protozoa, and viruses that cause serious illness. Even clear-looking water from a stream or river can contain Giardia, Cryptosporidium, or E. coli. A portable water purification system makes any water source safe to drink — removing the need to buy single-use plastic bottles and the risk of drinking contaminated water.

Travel Gear stocks portable water filters and purifiers for travel and camping, shipping from our Charlestown NSW warehouse with fast delivery across Australia.

Types of Water Purification

Hollow Fibre Filters (e.g. LifeStraw)

The most popular option for individual travel and hiking. A hollow fibre membrane with pores of 0.2 microns removes bacteria and protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium) but does not remove viruses. Adequate for most Australian bush water sources and many international destinations where viral contamination is low. The LifeStraw Personal filters up to 4,000L before replacement. Lightweight (45g), no chemicals, no waiting time.

Purifiers (e.g. Grayl Geopress)

Purifiers remove bacteria, protozoa, AND viruses — the only portable option that provides complete protection against all waterborne pathogens. The Grayl Geopress is the benchmark: fill from any source, press the plunger, and drink in 8 seconds. Filters 350ml per press, cartridge lasts 350 presses (approximately 65 litres). Heavier than a LifeStraw (450g) but provides complete protection. Essential for travel to destinations with viral waterborne disease risk (South and Southeast Asia, Africa, Central and South America).

UV Purifiers (e.g. SteriPen)

A UV light wand that destroys the DNA of bacteria, protozoa, and viruses in 90 seconds. Effective against all pathogens but requires clear water — turbid or silty water blocks UV penetration. Requires batteries or USB charging. Lightweight and fast, but less practical for murky water sources without pre-filtering.

Chemical Treatment (Iodine & Chlorine Tablets)

The lightest and cheapest option — a strip of tablets weighs under 20g and treats dozens of litres. Effective against bacteria and viruses; less effective against Cryptosporidium. Requires 30–60 minutes contact time before drinking. Leaves a chemical taste that can be masked with vitamin C tablets. Best used as a backup to a filter or purifier rather than a primary system.

Which Purification Method Do I Need?

  • Australian bush camping: A hollow fibre filter (LifeStraw or similar) is adequate — viral contamination is rare in Australian wilderness water sources
  • Southeast Asia, India, Africa: A purifier (Grayl Geopress) or UV purifier (SteriPen) is recommended — viral contamination is a real risk in these regions
  • Emergency backup: Chemical tablets are the lightest option for a pack emergency kit
  • Group camping: A pump filter or gravity filter treats larger volumes more efficiently than individual filters

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a water filter and a water purifier?

A filter removes bacteria and protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium) through a physical membrane. A purifier removes bacteria, protozoa, AND viruses — either through a finer membrane, UV light, or chemical treatment. For travel to developing countries where viral waterborne disease is a risk, a purifier is required. For Australian bush camping, a filter is generally adequate.

Is tap water safe to drink in Australia?

Yes — tap water in Australian cities and towns is treated and safe to drink without filtration. Water purification is relevant for Australian bush camping where you're drawing from streams, rivers, or rainwater tanks, and for international travel where tap water safety varies significantly by country and region.

How long do portable water filters last?

It depends on the filter type and usage. The LifeStraw Personal filters up to 4,000L; the Grayl Geopress cartridge lasts approximately 65L before replacement. Chemical tablets have a shelf life of 4–5 years unopened. UV purifier bulbs last 8,000–10,000 uses. Always carry a backup purification method on remote trips in case your primary system fails.
