Bed Bug Protection

Bed bugs are a genuine risk in hostels, budget hotels, and even some mid-range accommodation worldwide. They're not a sign of poor hygiene — they travel in luggage and clothing and can be found in any accommodation that has high guest turnover. A few simple precautions significantly reduce your risk of bringing them home.

Travel Gear ships from our Charlestown NSW warehouse with fast delivery across Australia.

Bed Bug Protection Essentials

  • Luggage liners: Seal your bag inside a protective liner when stored in a hotel room — prevents bed bugs from entering your luggage from the floor, bed frame, or furniture
  • Sleeping bag liners: A silk or cotton liner creates a barrier between you and potentially infested bedding. See our sleeping bag liners range
  • Bed bug repellent sprays: Permethrin-based sprays applied to luggage and clothing — repels and kills bed bugs on contact

How to Check for Bed Bugs

On arrival, inspect the mattress seams, headboard, and bed frame for small brown insects (1–5mm), rust-coloured stains, or dark spots. Store your luggage on a hard surface or luggage rack away from the bed and walls — never on the floor or bed. If you suspect an infestation, request a different room on a different floor.
