Natural Remedies for Jet Lag: What Actually Works

Natural Remedies for Jet Lag: What Actually Works

Jet lag affects nearly every long-haul traveller, but not everyone wants to reach for prescription medication. Fortunately, several natural remedies have solid evidence behind them — and a few others are worth trying even if the science is still catching up.

Melatonin

The most well-researched natural jet lag remedy. Melatonin is a hormone your body produces naturally at night to signal sleep. Taking a low dose (0.5–3mg) at your destination's bedtime for the first few nights after arrival can significantly speed up circadian adjustment. Timing matters more than dose — taking it too early can backfire.

Light Exposure

Natural light is the most powerful circadian reset tool available. On arrival:

  • Flying east? Seek morning light and avoid afternoon sun for the first day
  • Flying west? Get afternoon and evening light exposure
  • Avoid bright screens in the hours before your destination bedtime

Exercise

Moderate exercise at the right time helps anchor your new sleep-wake cycle. A brisk walk or light workout in natural daylight on arrival day is one of the most effective (and underrated) jet lag remedies.

Hydration

Cabin air is extremely dry — typically 10–20% humidity. Dehydration worsens every jet lag symptom. Drink at least 250ml of water per hour of flight and avoid alcohol and excess caffeine.

Fasting & Meal Timing

Eating at your destination's meal times from day one helps reset your digestive clock. Some travellers fast for the final stretch of a long flight and break the fast at breakfast time in the new time zone — a simple but effective reset signal.

Magnesium

Magnesium glycinate or magnesium threonate taken before bed can improve sleep quality without the grogginess associated with some sleep aids. Not a direct jet lag cure, but useful for improving sleep depth during adjustment.

What Doesn't Work

  • Alcohol (feels sedating but fragments sleep)
  • High-dose melatonin (more isn't better — can cause grogginess)
  • Sleeping pills on the plane (can worsen disorientation on arrival)
