By hour three of a long-haul flight, most people notice it — ankles starting to swell, legs feeling heavy, that dull ache that gets worse the longer you sit. It happens because prolonged immobility and low cabin pressure slow blood flow in your legs. These TGA-registered compression flight socks apply graduated pressure from ankle to knee to keep circulation moving, reduce fluid buildup, and help you arrive feeling significantly better than you would without them.

Registered with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration as a Class 1 Medical Device — ARTG260845. Compression level: 14–17mmHg. Available in Black and Nude, in Small, Medium, and Large. Ships from Australia.

Medical warning: Do not use if you have serious circulatory problems. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you have any circulatory problems, have had major surgery or chronic illness, or are pregnant. Not recommended for children under 13. Do not fold the top band over or allow socks to roll down.

Key Features

  • TGA-registered Class 1 Medical Device: ARTG260845 — registered with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration for use as a compression aid.
  • 14–17mmHg graduated compression: Firmest at the ankle, easing toward the knee — the clinically established range for travel compression.
  • Reduces swelling and leg fatigue: Helps prevent excess fluid buildup, swollen ankles, and tired, aching legs during extended sitting.
  • 80% nylon, 20% elastane: Holds compression level through repeated wear and washing when cared for correctly.
  • Three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large — sized by ankle and calf circumference for accurate, effective fit.
  • Two colour options: Black and Nude.

Size Guide — Measure Before You Order

Correct sizing is essential for effective compression. Measure the circumference of your ankle and the widest point of your calf with a soft tape measure. Choose the larger size if you fall between sizes.

Size Ankle circumference Widest calf circumference Top band
Small 18–21cm 28–39cm 26–37cm
Medium 21–24cm 33–41cm 31–39cm
Large 24–28cm 36–45cm 33–43cm

What's Included

  • 1 pair of compression flight socks (your chosen size and colour)

How to Put On Compression Socks

  1. Turn the sock inside out down to the heel.
  2. Place your foot into the sock and pull the heel into position.
  3. Gradually roll the sock up your leg, smoothing out any wrinkles as you go.
  4. Ensure the top band sits below the knee — do not fold it over or allow it to roll down.
  5. Check that the sock feels firm but not painful. If circulation feels restricted, remove and consult a healthcare professional.

Tip: Put the socks on before boarding, ideally while still at the gate. It's much easier to fit them correctly when you're not in a cramped seat.

In-Flight Tips to Support Circulation

Compression socks work best as part of a broader approach to in-flight health. The Australian Government's Smartraveller health guidance recommends the following alongside compression stockings:

  • Move your legs regularly: Flex and rotate your ankles, press your feet against the floor, and do calf raises in your seat every 30–60 minutes.
  • Walk the cabin: Get up and walk to the back of the plane or to the bathroom when the seatbelt sign is off.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly. Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine, which contribute to dehydration.
  • Choose an aisle seat: Makes it easier to get up and move without disturbing other passengers.

What is DVT and Why Does It Matter on Flights?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in the deep veins of the leg, most commonly during extended periods of immobility. On long-haul flights, low cabin pressure and prolonged sitting reduce blood flow in the legs, increasing the risk of clot formation.

While the risk of DVT on any individual flight is low, the consequences can be serious. If a clot breaks free and travels to the lungs (pulmonary embolism), it can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, and in rare cases, be life-threatening. Compression socks are one of several recommended precautions alongside staying hydrated, moving regularly, and walking the cabin when safe to do so.

Care Instructions

  • Machine wash warm, gentle cycle.
  • Do not tumble dry — air dry flat to maintain compression level.
  • Do not iron or dry clean.
  • Replace socks when compression feels reduced or fabric shows significant wear — typically after 3–6 months of regular use.

Best For

  • Long-haul and international travellers on flights of 4 hours or more
  • Frequent flyers who experience swollen ankles or leg fatigue after flying
  • Travellers advised by a healthcare professional to wear compression during travel
  • Anyone who wants a TGA-registered, clinically proven compression option for travel
  • Long car, bus, or train journeys where extended sitting is unavoidable

Not Ideal For

  • People with serious circulatory problems — consult a healthcare professional before use
  • Children under 13
  • Anyone who has not measured their ankle and calf before ordering — an ill-fitting sock will not provide effective compression
  • Anyone prescribed a specific compression level above 17mmHg by a doctor — check your prescription before purchasing

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these TGA-registered?

Yes. These socks are registered with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as a Class 1 Medical Device under ARTG number 260845. You can verify this on the TGA ARTG public summary.

What compression level is 14–17mmHg?

14–17mmHg is a mild-to-moderate graduated compression level, commonly recommended for travel and general leg health. It is firmer than standard support hosiery but below the medical-grade levels (20mmHg+) used for diagnosed venous conditions. If you have been prescribed a specific compression level by a doctor, confirm this product meets your prescription before purchasing.

How do I know which size to order?

Measure the circumference of your ankle and the widest point of your calf with a soft tape measure. Match your measurements to the size guide above. If you fall between sizes, choose the larger size. An ill-fitting compression sock will not provide effective compression.

When should I put them on?

Put them on before you board — ideally at the gate while you still have space to sit comfortably and fit them correctly. Compression socks are harder to put on correctly in a cramped aircraft seat.

Can I wear these on short flights or non-flight travel?

Yes. While most commonly recommended for flights of 4 hours or more, they are also suitable for long car journeys, bus trips, and train travel — any extended period of sitting where leg circulation may be reduced.

How many times can I wear them before replacing?

With proper care (gentle machine wash, air dry flat), compression socks typically maintain their compression level for 3–6 months of regular use. Replace them when the fabric feels loose or the compression noticeably reduces.

Can I wear these if I'm pregnant?

Consult your healthcare professional before use during pregnancy. Compression socks are sometimes recommended during pregnancy travel, but the appropriate compression level and fit should be confirmed by your doctor or midwife.

Do these socks have a left and right foot?

Compression socks are typically symmetrical and do not have a designated left or right. Check the packaging or product for any specific guidance.
